CS2 case opening glossary

New to case opening? This glossary explains the words you will see on CS2 case sites and in the game, in plain English. Terms that are specific to CSVOLT are marked as such. Use it as a reference and follow the links for the full guides.

Cases and odds

  • Case: a list of items, each with its own drop chance. You pay the price and get one item.
  • Drop chance: how likely an item is in one opening, shown as a percentage on the case page.
  • Ticket: on CSVOLT every case has 10,000,000 tickets. Each item owns a range of them. One opening draws one ticket. See CS2 case odds explained.
  • Ticket range: the tickets an item owns. Click an item on a case page to see it.
  • Volatility: how spread out the item values in a case are. CSVOLT shows L, M, H or I: Low, Medium, High, Insane.
  • Demo spin: a free spin that shows how a case opens. It costs nothing and gives no item.
  • Fast spin: a shorter reel animation, switched on with the lightning button.
  • Volt Spin: on CSVOLT, a second reel that reveals which of a case's top items you got. It never changes the odds. See Volt Spin explained.
  • Volt Spin items: the top items of a case, marked with a small Volt badge in the contents.

Skins

  • Skin: a paint finish for a weapon, knife or gloves in CS2.
  • Rarity: the tier of a skin, shown by color: Consumer, Industrial, Mil-Spec, Restricted, Classified, Covert, and gold for knives and gloves. See CS2 rarity colors explained.
  • Rare special item: a knife or gloves, shown in gold with a ★.
  • Wear: how used a skin looks: Factory New (FN), Minimal Wear (MW), Field Tested (FT), Well Worn (WW) or Battle Scarred (BS).
  • Float: the number from 0 to 1 behind the wear. Lower is cleaner. See wear and float explained.
  • Pattern: a number that decides where the paint sits on the weapon. It matters a lot for some finishes.
  • StatTrak™: a version of a skin with a kill counter. See StatTrak and Souvenir explained.
  • Souvenir: a version from a Major tournament package, with event stickers.
  • Vanilla: a knife with no paint finish and no wear.
  • Trade URL: the Steam link that lets others send you trade offers. Needed to redeem skins.
  • Trade hold: a Steam rule that delays or limits trades for a time. Case sites cannot override it.

Fairness

  • Provably fair: a way to prove results were fixed before you played and not changed. See how to verify provably fair results.
  • Server seed: a random secret made by the site. You see only its hash until it is revealed.
  • Hash: a fingerprint of a seed. It fits only one seed, and the seed cannot be worked out from it.
  • Client seed: a string you control. It is mixed into every result.
  • Nonce: a counter that goes up by one with every play on the same seed pair, starting at 0.
  • Rotate seeds: start a new seed pair. The old server seed is revealed so you can verify.
  • Seed chain: a list of seeds fixed in advance, used one per round in shared games like Double.

Games

  • Case battle: a match where every seat opens the same cases and the scores decide the winner. See how CS2 case battles work.
  • Regular, Team, Shared: the battle formats. Shared splits everything equally.
  • Crazy Mode: the lowest score wins.
  • Jackpot Mode: one seat is drawn at the end, weighted by score.
  • Terminal Mode: only the last round's item counts for the score.
  • Borrow Mode: every seat pays part of the price and keeps that share of its winnings.
  • Cook: on CSVOLT, a saved battle setup you can create again in one click.
  • Bot: a seat played by the house. Bots roll exactly like people and can win.
  • Upgrader: put skins or coins in for a chance at a better skin. See the Upgrader guide.
  • Win zone: the part of the Upgrader dial that wins. Its size is your chance.
